If you find yourself asking this question, then one of our vans is probably not for you. Despite being very well maintained, the vans are all over 40 years old, and were not modern cars even in the 70s; they belong to a different era.
Take your time, relax, and enjoy the drive. Leave plenty of time to get to where you want, and hey, if you don't get there you will get somewhere else.
You should not compare one of our vans with a modern vehicle; the biggest part of the experience is to take your time and allow plenty of time to get to where you're going. Driving at 70-80 km/h is comfortable and the most you should expect to do (it will be slower up hills, of course). If travelling every day, then realistically 50-70kms is more than enough.
The vans do not do well on motorways and cannot keep up with modern traffic, especially on long hills, so we recommend not using motorways and sticking to the quieter "N" roads. We do not supply a transponder for the vans, so if you must use the motorways you will need to register and pay the tolls separately.
No, the vans have heating when on the move but no heating at rest. But hey, this is Portugal, so you'll find that heating usually isn't required, especially in summer.
We recommend bring a sleeping bag if renting in the Spring or late Autumn. The weather is great until the end of October, which is also the best time of year for surf on this beautiful coast.
Well, there are two thoughts on this:
The first is that there is a particular site you want to stay at in August or during a bank holiday, then definitely. Otherwise, just show up and you should be fine.
The second is from people that don't go to campsites at all and just wild camp by the beaches or rivers. You will very rarely be asked to move; if there is a carpark with a café, then it may be polite to buy some food and ask, but generally – unless otherwise marked – parking is allowed anywhere for one or two days. If there are complaints from local businesses or residents, the police may request that you move elsewhere. In August, many temporary sites open near the beach, generally with just a parking spot and possibly a toilet block. These are often run by cafés or bars.
